Berlin, 2 November 2007 - Taking as its slogan "Rural areas – regional diversity, quality and innovation", a special show organised by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) will be taking place from 18 to 27 January at the International Green Week 2008. A colourful show featuring all aspects of agriculture, the food industry and consumer protection in Germany awaits visitors in Hall 23a, and will address a whole range of topics. The diverse effects of farming business activities and how they benefit society will be looked at in special ways. In rural areas the agricultural sector fulfils important social responsibilities besides its basic functions. It renders a whole range of services and in doing so reflects the interests of the consumer.
The slogan "Experiencing diversity and local regions" describes rural areas as an attractive living space offering potential for the future by taking visitors on a walk through "regions with a future". In different sections of the exhibition various German regions will show how they are capable of shaping a successful future by taking a pro-active approach. The range of topics includes cross-border collaboration on agriculture, nature conservation, use of land and tourism, and also alternative income sources and measures to overcome structural deficits. The Rural Youth Organisation will also advise on ways to transfer farms into the hands of non-family ownership, and on setting up new farming businesses as a means of stemming the growing tide of people moving out of rural areas situated in structurally weak regions.
Prospects in rural areas, particularly with regard to young people, are closely linked with "competence for the future". The Bildungshaus will be presenting interesting training opportunities that are certain to provide security for the future, and will offer attractive job prospects in agriculture. For example, there will be information on training to become a gardener, farmer, specialist in agricultural services, or wine grower. Taking as its slogan "at home in rural areas" a farmyard caf will be offering its guests genuine rural hospitality and serving regional specialities.
Maintaining a quality of life also means sustaining supply mechanisms in local regions and ensuring they function in the future. The issue is guaranteeing basic supplies to small communities in rural areas. Improving accessibility to modern media contributes significantly to a quality of life and ensures that rural regions are competitive. Providing broadband access, and thereby sharing communal responsibility, is a good opportunity to improve IT networks in rural areas. Everything that one could need in this respect can be found at the MarktTreff.
Renewable raw materials contribute substantially towards developing rural areas in a way that ensures their future sustainability. This is the subject of the fair section under the heading of "Nature as a provider of therapeutic agents, cosmetics and bioplastics". The theme in the hop orchard next door is hops as a medicinal plant.
The forum for children and students will serve as a meeting place for children, teachers and parents. The focus will be on nutrition and exercise, at home, at school and when travelling. Being up to date on dietary information ensures a better quality of life, not only where children are concerned. Guided tours of the individual sections in Hall 23a for children, students and adults will aim to generate interest in general consumer information and useful nutritional facts.
The Consumer Information section will be offering a wide range of advice for the consumer, and the topic at the "water bar" will be how agriculture helps to provide drinking water. Consumer organisations will have information on food additives, while Bio-Siegel, AID and BMELV will inform visitors about labelling carrying nutritional information and about food allergies.
Leading chefs will once again be demonstrating their skills in the cookery studio, the topic being a healthy diet for people of all ages. A programme of stage events in Hall 23a featuring celebrities from politics, business and entertainment, and the caf in the corn field will be inviting visitors to spend time at the 2008 special show of the BMELV entitled "Rural areas – regional diversity quality and innovation".
