A hall devoted to the diversity of the long-life raw material wood -

Many aspects of forestry and timber industries on show at the IGW -

New exhibition, "Wood, the future", by the Timber Sales Fund

Multitalented Wood:

Berlin, 10 December 2007 – Visitors to the special Multitalented Wood show at the International Green Week 2008 (18-27 Jan.) can expect a fascinating programme dealing with many different aspects of a raw material with an outstandingly long life. The forestry and timber industries will be staging their largest ever display at the Green Week in the "Experience Wood Hall" (Hall 4.2), focusing on "Woodlands and Woodland Management", "Timber Processing", "Building with Wood", "Heating with Wood", "Interior Fittings and Furniture", and "Working, Learning and Living with Wood".

The presentation by the forestry departments from five German states provides a cross section of woodlands in all their diversity, and of woodland management in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, Berlin, Brandenburg, Lower Saxony and Hesse. For example a harvester simulator will help visitors to gain a better understanding of the latest machinery being used in forestry. These machines fell the trees, remove side branches, cut the trunk to lengths and deposit the various pieces by the side of the track. Visitors to Multitalented Wood can obtain a clearer picture of these wood harvesting methods and even operate the 3D harvester simulator under supervision. There will also be an opportunity to display one's own forestry skills in creating a woodland: the computer game SimWald is an entertaining way of explaining about woodland management. The computer can be used to undertake a virtual trip into the woods to mark trees, and a check can then be made at five-yearly intervals to determine how effective the work has been.

The use of woodlands for tourism and educational purposes will also be widely featured. The eagle owl Heinrich will be coming up from Hesse to report on the Kellerwald National Park. The display will also include many other wonders of nature that can be found in the forests between the Baltic coast and Germany’s central mountain range. Younger visitors can test their knowledge of forests by following a trail with woodland sights and sounds, and there will also be a climbing tree, where climbing and abseiling techniques can be practiced, although of course it takes a little courage to swing about high above the hall.

The Multitalented Wood show provides an extensive supporting programme and a range of activities for big and little children in particular. And of course there will be papers on the various technical subjects. A number of work benches will be provided, where visitors can try their hand at turning wood, under expert supervision. Creating a sculpture or a useful item out of a piece of wood can be a truly rewarding experience. Another section will be devoted to "Making Paper", for which wood or wood pulp have been used for thousands of years.

The possibilities offered by wood

The Timber Sales Fund has created a new exhibition entitled "Wood, the future", which deals in particular with the many possible uses of this renewable raw material, wood. This exhibition, whose patron is Federal Minister Horst Seehofer, is making its debut at the Green Week. Some of the secrets associated with wood, and the opportunities that it offers, will be presented here. A giant kicker will represent the potential offered by forestry and the timber industry. Visitors can influence a light installation or take a journey into the future by film inside a glass sphere. Touch screens are provided as a way for individuals to find out more about the subjects of the exhibition.

There will also be an active workshop featuring various practical aspects and craftsmen at work. This will be an opportunity to learn about some of the craft trades that use wood. Carpenters, cabinet-makers and joiners will all be displaying their skills, They will be hard at work using hammers, saws and planes, making the shavings fly, and the smell of fresh timber will be in the air. To the screeching sound of saws, demonstrations will be provided, showing how boards can be sawn using a mobile sawmill in the woods. During the two practical days there will be an opportunity to acquire a "chainsaw operator's certificate". The theoretical section will be followed by a chance to actually use a chainsaw, under the skilled supervision of qualified forester. Having acquired this qualification there is nothing to stop you from going into the woods to collect firewood. But wood has many other things to offer as well. For example, it is an ideal material for building houses, and architects and building owners will find many suggestions here. The adjoining stand is a source of useful information about how to heat the new house with wood, in the form of firewood, wood chips or pellets. The next door stand offers solutions for supplying and delivering wood to visitors who want to make use of modern service providers. Anyone who is convinced by this display of the many different uses for wood can pay a call to the various training organisations to find out more about a career in forestry or working with wood, and become a member of this large, multitalented family.
