Norway: Satisfied visitors and good trade contacts
"Our participants are very satisfied", says Kjell Joar Rognstad from the Norwegian combined stand. This year’s display area has been increased and expanded to include a bakery. Visitors to the trade show are keenly interested in agricultural products from the north, and the first consignment of salmon has already sold out. The Norwegians’ recipe, i.e. developing a love of their country through its food, has again proved a success, and not only in the demonstration kitchen, where chefs are constantly combining products from individual exhibitors to create new menus. Rognstad reports that trade contacts are very promising too. Pure products from Norway are now available in Berlin’s KaDeWe department store, and the Mills group, manufacturers of marinaded herrings and spreads have successfully established contacts with one department store group and with the fish trade.

Finland rates increased presence at the fair a major success
"We are completely satisfied", was the verdict from Pekka Visnen, spokesman for the Finnish Ministry for Agriculture and Forests. After a long interval, when the country was only represented by the private sector, the ministry decided to present various food producers on a much larger combined stand this year. "Our objective of acquainting German consumers with Finnish products has been attained." This was confirmed by the many thousands of samples that have already been distributed to visitors. On the questionnaire that was also handed out most visitors were very complimentary in their assessment of the delicacies from the north. One drinks manufacturer also made use of the Green Week as a means of handing out samples to find out what tastes best to Germans. Finland will return again next year, perhaps with its own restaurant.

REWE Group presents WWF with cheque for 150,000 euros to "Save the Polar Bears"
"Today we take great pleasure in presenting the WWF with 150,000 euros, to help protect polar bears against the consequences of climate change", said Manfred Esser, Director of Strategic Purchasing for the REWE Group, on 24 January, when the cheque was officially handed over to Klaus-Henning Groth, Director of Public Relations and Policy for the WWF, at the Farm Experience, part of the International Green Week in Berlin. The REWE Group emphasised how important it is for companies to embrace sustainability. The REWE Group and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) have been working together as part of the international campaign "Save the Polar Bears" to preserve the habitat of the largest terrestrial predator: since December 2007 the group has been donating 15 cents to the WWF for each Philips energy-saving dual pack that it sells. A total of a million energy-saving lamps have already been sold, enabling households in Germany and Austria to achieve savings of up to 180,000 tonnes of CO2.
The informative exhibition "World of the Potato. The Career of a Tuber" is attracting much interest among visitors to Hall 1.2 . It has been commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and organised at the Green Week by the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). This show graphically presents botanical details about the potato plant, along with information about cultivation, genetic diversity and its contribution to safeguarding world food supplies. Exhibits including replicas of historic Inca pots, a classification system for potato pests and innovative packaging materials made from starch provide visitors with a graphic impression of the cultural and economic importance of this tuber. Around the world the potato is the fourth most important basic foodstuff, after wheat, rice and maize. It is packed full of energy in the form of starch, as well as vitamins, especially vitamin C, and minerals, primarily
potassium. Potato protein, the second most important component after starch, is more valuable than that of any other plant. With all that it contains, the potato is an invaluable ally in efforts to combat hunger around the world. The United Nations has declared 2008 to be the International Year of the Potato, and the travelling exhibition that can currently be seen at the Green Week focus our attention on this tuber.
nature.tec: Everything you need to know about biogas
As a rule agricultural biogas plants are operated as continuous flow-through systems. At their heart is a fermenter, one of which can be seen on the stand that has been organised by the Fachverband Biogas e.V. at "nature.tec – specialist show for bio energy and renewable raw materials". The materials that are fed in are broken down by bacteria and converted into biogas. Comprehensive details about biogas can be found in Hall 4.2, where technically qualified staff are on hand and there are plenty of opportunities for in-depth discussions.

Austria’s largest display ever at this event
Austria is exhibiting again this year in Halls 15 and 16, but with a new concept, focusing on its role as a supplier of luxury and semi-luxury foodstuffs. A total of 34 exhibitors, eight federal states and the national association "Urlaub am Bauernhof" (Farm Holidays) are presenting their "luxury products" on an area measuring 2,500 square metres. As AMA Marketing points out, this is the largest display ever by this country at the Green Week. The clearly defined, modern design of the new stand has been decorated entirely in the national colours of red-white-red. Carinthia’s products encompass old-established brewing traditions and tasty sausages. "The taste of Austria" is the slogan of the initiative by Austria’s largest federal state, with typical regional specialities from the north of the state. Burgenland is promoting its wines and liqueurs. A popular vacation destination, Tyrol is presenting its finest cheeses from the mountains, and spreading a holiday atmosphere. The regions of Styria are promoting pears known as Pllauer Hirschbirne and East Syrian apples. With its indigenous products Vorarlberg is presenting an unmistakable taste of home. Upper Austria invites all gourmets to come and enjoy typical regional and indigenous delights as cheese, bacon, sausages and strong spirits. And Salzburg is represented by fruit juices, cheese and bacon.
The Republic of Serbia is represented for the third time by an official combined stand at the Green Week, according to GTZ Project Manager Emilija Pavlovic. She adds that the stand has been organised and financed by the Serbian Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management in cooperation with the promotion agency SIEPA and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). The project manager also points out that the presentation at this trade show is intended to publicise typical local products and the country itself. All the items on show from the various manufacturers are premium products and include truffles, marzipan, paprika specialities, jams, dried fungi, spirits such as sljivovica as well as white and red wines. Emilija Pavlovic mentions three products which are very typical of Serbia. Ajvar is a blend of paprika which is available either in a hot or a mild version, and is eaten in her country either spread on bread or as a side dish. The very sweet jam known as slatko is traditionally offered with water to welcome guests. And bermet is a special dessert wine containing over 20 different herbs and spices, and tastes good, for example, with dry cake to finish off a meal.
South Africa: Enjoy fine wines from an opera singer and an architect
Georg Holba has brought a number of high quality wines from the Paarl region to display on the South African stand at the Green Week. The indigenous grape variety Pinotage is a cross between Pinot noir and Hermitage, and Holba is presenting a "De Leuwen Jagt" from 2007. One might think this wine is too new, but in fact the grapes are harvested at the Cape in February, six months earlier than in Europe. The wine is produced in steel tanks and fits in with a trend that Holba has identified at the Green Week: visitors prefer new and fruity wines. The sales manager and his team are also exhibiting some more mature wines: What he refers to as the "fine line" includes "Veenwouden 2000" Merlot from North Paarl, which is aged 24 months in barrels. "The Merlot grape is not very demanding, but Veenwouden is not pressed in vast quantities, and comes from one of the country’s most exclusive estates."

Weihenstephan is presenting "Xan Wellness" beer.
The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan, which claims to be the world’s oldest brewery, now includes a wellness beer in its product range. "Xan-Wellness" can be found on the stand of the Hallertau hop growers’ association in Hall 23a. "It is a natural and ideal drink for sportsmen and women", says Florian Amberger, consultant and project manager for the Hallertau hop growers’ association. Xan comes from xanthohumol, a substance contained in hops, has an antioxidant effect and is reputed to render anti-oxidants harmless. This beer contains this substance in concentrations 50 times higher than in normal beers, along with vitamin C and natural vitamin B9 in the form of folic acid. This beverage comprises 40 per cent alcohol-free wheat beer and 60 per cent multi-fruit drink. It has also received the highest endorsement from universities: Xan-Wellness was developed at the Faculty of Brewing Technology at the Technical University Munich. "The biological effects are being investigated in a joint project with nutritional scientists and physicians", says Prof. Werner Back, who was involved in developing this beer. The initial findings are expected within about five years.
From A (Austria) to V (Venezuela): 131 beers from 56 countries
Beers from all over the world can be found everywhere at the Green Week, but nowhere is there such a wide range as there is on the stand of a specialist supplier in Hall 12, with no fewer than 131 different sorts from 56 countries, from A for Austria to V for Venezuela . They include such exotic items as Cubanero from Cuba and Zhu Jiang from China. With an alcohol content of 14 per cent by volume Samichlaus from Austria is one of the world’s strongest beers, while kosher Simcha beer is brewed in Germany under the supervision of a rabbi. Among the best-selling items from Hamburg’s "Haus der 131 Biere" (House of 131 Beers) are Belgian chocolate beers, James Boag’s Premium Lager from Tasmania, Tusker beer from Kenya and Canada’s Molson beer. "Qing Zhu" bamboo beer, brewed under licence from China, is also very popular according to Alex Hessel, who is running the stand together with a colleague.
