Berlin, 28 January 2012 A world agricultural summit, a magnet for the public and an unforgettable experience: the International Green Week Berlin 2012 (IGW) continued to consolidate its reputation as the world’s largest consumer show for agriculture, food and horticulture and its role as a leading trade show for the entire agribusiness sector.

This year’s Green Week closes on Sunday, having attracted the highest attendance for four years. Over 420,000 visitors (2011: 415,000) flocked to the exhibition halls at Berlin’s radio tower, the Funkturm, from 20 to 29 January. The per capita expenditure by consumers of 109 euros was at or around the previous year’s figure (2011: 110 €) and provided the exhibitors with sales exceeding 45 million euros. Compared with the previous IGW attendance by trade visitors rose by 5,000 to a total of 105,000. Approximately 70 ministers of agriculture came to Berlin from all over the world, representing half the world’s population. In their statements representatives of the official national displays were unanimous in praising the good opportunities that were available for making contacts and staging presentations. With 1,624 exhibitors from 56 countries (2011: 1,632/57 countries) and a display area of 115,000 square metres, the world’s largest consumer show for agriculture, food and horticulture again matched the record levels of previous years.

In summing up the results of this event Dr. Christian Gke, Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin GmbH, gave a positive assessment: "This year, in an agricultural policy context, the Green Week achieved its strongest impact ever. Some 70 ministers of agriculture from all over the world, leading figures from agriculture and the food industry, and numerous representatives from every aspect of agribusiness met here to discuss agricultural policy issues. The Green Week, more than any other trade show, focuses on informing consumers about all aspects of food "quality" and "safety". Consumers now have a much more critical attitude towards foodstuffs and the Green Week provides the answers to their questions. The Green Week 2012 was very much in tune with the times with its "Federal States Street", which was organised in association with the topical emphasis on the regions. Never before have so many regional products from Germany been displayed here. And for consumers, knowing the origins of their foodstuffs is a matter of the utmost priority.
